The pink triangle has been a symbol for the LGBTQIA+ community, initially intended as a badge of shame, but later reclaimed as a positive symbol of self-identity and love for queerness. In Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, it began as one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, distinguishing those imprisoned because they had been identified by authorities as gay men.
In the 1980s, the pink triangle was increasingly used not just as a memorial but as a positive symbol of both self-identity and the LGBTQIA+ community being incorporated into the logos of organisations and businesses.
Taking a more militant tone, the “AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power” (ACT UP) formed by six gay activists in New York City during 1987 to draw attention to the disease's disproportionate impact on LGBTQIA+ community.
Utilised bold graphic design with an upward-pointing pink triangle on a black field along with typography with slogans such as “SILENCE = DEATH"
Another activist organisation Queer Nation founded in 1990 utilised posters on the streets, banners at rallies along with chants/slogans such as "Two, Four, Six, Eight! How Do You Know Your Kids Are Straight?" and "Out of the Closets and Into the Streets," and the now famous "We're Here! We're Queer! Get used to it!"
